Imperfections?
This series is an ongoing project that addresses body image and perception of women. I ask each woman I photograph, “What do you hate the most about your body?” I’ve found that most people I ask jump at the chance to single out parts of their body that they are unhappy with. We live in a culture that has become so obsessed with losing twenty pounds in two weeks, age reversal cremes, eating disorders, and reality TV shows that offer plastic surgery as a prize. This emphasis on the unattainable, ideal body drives many women to take drastic measures to alter their body in order to measure up to the impossible standards that are imposed by the media, or even themselves. Many of the women I have photographed have altered their lifestyles in order mask their imperfections. After our conversations and photo session many of the women began to overcome the idea that their body should not be seen. When confronted with the prospect of permanent change or alteration to these imperfections, many would not consider this an option. These conclusions led to questioning in the series title.
